Skyrim Nightingale lore volume one

welcome i see you came hear again to hear the shadows Ramblings . Today i will be talking about Skyrim Nightingale Lore volume one.

please enjoy these ramblings

As a Nightingale, I feel compelled to place quill to paper and discuss what we are and who we are.
“Our trinity serves the Lady Nocturnal, the Empress of Murk and the Daughter of Twilight.” (nightingale book one) Nocturnal to me has some similarities to the Celtic Goddess Mhorrigan

Lady Nocturnal                                                                                                       The Mhorrigan

“We believe her to be our patron, if not the patron of all thieves worldwide. We serve her without prayer, without charity and without celebration. Our bond with Nocturnal is in the form of a business transaction we strike known as the Oath. Her terms are simple and binding. “ (Nightingale book 1)
As a follower of the Mhorrigan I see her having many similarities like this as well especially once you make an oath to her. A lot of people make promises (oaths) and not take them seriously. To me that’s a huge thing. My word is who and what I am. Yes the Mhorrigan doesn’t have the thief aspect as nocturnal.
“As Nightingales we are required to guard the Twilight Sepulcher, the Temple of Nocturnal, against those perceived as a threat. In return, we are allowed to use our abilities as Nightingales to further our own means and the means of the Thieves Guild.” (Nightingale book one.)
As with deities in skyrim and the real world they do grant us abilities and they do demand a gift for a gift. Again this goes back to being careful with the oaths you make. The Mhorrigan in her dealings with Cuchulainn she gave him gifts in Irish lore it was grated great battle prowess but with that the Mhorrigan tested him and his word. On numerous time she appeared to him to get him to try and break his vows, and in the end. She was there. Just as nocturnal tests she is always there.
“Upon our death, we are bound to the Twilight Sepulcher as guardian spirits until such time as Nocturnal feels our contract has been fulfilled. Our ultimate fate lies within the Evergloam, Nocturnal’s realm. There, our spirits become one with shadow itself and we become the cloak which envelops all of our fellow thieves in their endeavors. This is the true origin of the phrase "walk with the shadows" uttered within the Thieves Guild.” (nightingales book one)
we all have been chosen I feel to be guardians. The Mhorrigan in fact does act as a guardian for her followers. This is well shown in the story on the death of Cuchulainn. She tested him terribly and warned him but he ignored her warnings, and as a result died. But did she leave him no. she held him in her arms as he died, she can be seen as the guardian of the dead. In a similar way Nocturnal is the Guardian of thieves. But what we are to guard? If you looked at the Mhorrigan we are to guard knowledge and the dead and dying. For nocturnal it’s knowledge and well thieves. But in today’s world we are also called to guard the earth it’s self. For me I see the twilight Sepulcher, as the earth it’s self. “The Twilight Sepulcher is more than a temple, it contains a conduit from our world to the Evergloam, a swirling pool of liquid midnight we call the Ebonmere.” (Nightingale book one) I also see us when we die going to the “ebonmere” (the shadows.) and then being reincarnated. This brings up an interesting. Point, that upon death we truly do walk with the shadows. So in essence that phrase well part of it has a two fold meaning. As a blessing and a curse. The Mhorrigan chooses people to guard the earth, well and do her bidding in different ways just like Nocturnal ask the Nightingales to guard the Sepulcher. Some in both cases guard with sword. Today the sword is going against the big companies, and well wars and battles. But also word, and that is spreading the word about what is going on. Some battles need to be fought.

Now lets look at the skeleton key. To me the skeleton key is knowledge it’s self yes the skeleton key is a very much a misunderstood artifact, in fact isn’t knowledge it’s self misunderstood?” While this is true, the wonder of this device can only be appreciated once the owner is willing to expand his mind and abstract what defines "unlocking." This action refers to more than simple doors and portals. In the proper hands, the Skeleton Key has the capability to unlock hidden potential and untapped abilities. The extent of this power has yet to be discovered, which is a frightening thought if it ever fell into the wrong hands.” and that truly what true knowledge is untapping our potential. So, in essence the skeleton key can also represent human potential. And both the Mhorrigan and Noctural what us to unlock it. Yes just like the skeleton key it’s self knowledge needs to be guarded. For if in the wrong hands disasters can happen. As nightingales and part of the human race it truly is our duty to not only protect but recover knowledge if it is stolen.
In a way nightingales are more than a holy order. “To say that the Nightingales are a holy order would be doing us a disservice. In our hearts, we are thieves. We enjoy the hunt and delight in the spoils. We might swear our loyalty to Nocturnal and hold some influence within the Thieves Guild, but the greatest allegiance a Nightingale holds is to himself. “They are the keepers of mysteries and knowledge and with the knowledge they have only they can decides them self everyone has the potential to break allegiance. All we can do is strive to be better and live by the oaths we make. Just like the followers of Mhorrigan are called to keep her knowledge she gives, and the powers she grants us that truly follow her. She does though ask for sacrifice. Just like Nocturnal ask that the nightingales guard the twilight splectacr . The Mhorrigan as her followers to sacrifice of them selves. again a gift must be given for a gift to be received.
